The Democrats of Comal County are profoundly honored to announce that the 2009 Bob Krueger Public Service Award will be awarded to Paul Rusesabagina on Saturday, November 14, 2009. Mr. Rusesabagina is a Rwandan who has been
internationally honored for saving 1,268 civilians during the 1994
Rwandan genocide. During the Rwandan genocide, Mr. Rusesabagina used his
influence and connections as temporary manager of the Hotel Mille
Collines to shelter 1,268 Tutsis and moderate Hutus from being
slaughtered by the Interahamwe militia. His bravery inspired the Academy
Award nominated film Hotel Rwanda. Mr. Rusesabagina received the US
Presidential Medal of Freedom, our nation's highest civilian honor, in
2005 from President George W. Bush for his courageous acts to preserve
human life in the face of the horrific Rwandan genocide. Mr.
Rusesabagina published his memoir, "An Ordinary Man", in 2006. He
currently lives in Belgium with his wife and children. Did you know that buildings, not cars, produce the most CO2 in the U. S.? According to an article in the current issue of National Geographic magazine, private residences, shopping malls, warehouses and offices account for 38% of the nations's emissions. Part of the problem is that the average house in this country is an astonishing 45% larger than it was 30 years ago. Check out the entire article Saving Energy Starts at Home and what you can do to reduce your own carbon 'footprint'. One of the most readily available methods to us living here in Central Texas is to simply hang the clothes out to dry rather than tossing them into the dryer.
